Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) celebrated Senior Day with a triple-double as Lourdes defeated the University of Michigan-Dearborn 77-52 on Saturday afternoon inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Lauf finished the game with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists, completing the triple-double with a helper to
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) for a lay-in with 1:29 to play in the game.
"I am overly excited for Brett," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "It is very difficult to do as a play and it is special. He should be proud of himself."
Lourdes started slow but used a big second half to pull away from the Wolverines to notch its 20
th victory of the season for the third time in program history.
The Gray Wolves led just 32-28 at halftime but held Michigan-Dearborn to just 27.8% shooting in the second half, including 1-of-11 (9.1%) from three-point range while forcing 11 second half turnovers.
The lead was just three, 38-35, with 14 minutes to play when the Gray Wolves connected on five three-pointers as part of an 18-0 run over the next six minutes, breaking the game open. Lourdes continued to extend the lead, pushing the advantage to as many as 26 in the final stanza, on the way to remaining in a tie for third place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference standings.
"The second half was more of a Lourdes team, and we played good basketball," Hopson added. "We shot the ball decent today, but 19 turnovers is unacceptable for this point in the season."
Holifield, Lauf, and
Charles Swain (Cincinnati, Ohio/North College Hill H.S.) paced Lourdes with 13 points each while
McRay White (Cleveland, Ohio/Garfield H.S.) had 12 and
Little Anderson (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) added 10 as five Gray Wolves finished the game in double figures.
Lourdes had a 49-35 advantage on the glass, with
Nick Welch (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary Catholic Central H.S.) matching Lauf for game-high honors with 12 boards.
Jimmy Breaux led Michigan-Dearborn (3-23, 1-15 WHAC) with 12 points while Troy Campbell added 10 more.
Lourdes (20-5, 12-5) will close out the home portion of the schedule on Monday evening with a make-up contest against Indiana Tech. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
