Lourdes closed out the regular season on Saturday afternoon, dropping an 87-67 decision on the road at Cornerstone inside of Mol Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.
"We did not match their physicality, nor did we do anything on defense today," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "It is tough to win games if you can't do either of the two."
The Golden Eagles raced out to a 15-1 lead, holding Lourdes scoreless from the floor for more than six-and-a-half minutes to open the contest. The Cornerstone lead grew to 21-3 at the 11-minute mark and another 22-4 un in the first half pushed the advantage to 30, 52-22, at the 2:43 mark. The Gray Wolves scored the final seven points of the stanza to pull within 23 heading into the locker room.
Cornerstone pushed the lead back to 30, 75-45, midway through the second half before Lourdes used a 20-6 run to close within 16 with two minutes to play. That would be as close as the Gray Wolves would get the rest of the way.
Nick Welch (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary Catholic Central H.S.) led Lourdes with 19 points and seven rebounds while
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) added 17 points.
Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) came off the bench to add 16 more for the Gray Wolves.
Lourdes shot just 36.7% from the floor and made 6-of-23 (26.1%) three-point attempts. The Gray Wolves were outrebounded 41-34 and the Golden Eagles held a 32-26 edge scoring in the paint.
Carter Nyp led Cornerstone (21-9, 15-5 WHAC) with 31 points while Christian Rodriguez added 26 points and seven assists. Jonny Strube also scored 19 points for the Golden Eagles as the hosts shot 50.8% from the field, including 44.4% (12-of-27) from three-point range.
Lourdes (21-7, 13-7) will host a quarterfinal game in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament on Wednesday evening beginning at 7 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center. Official pairings will be released by the league office following the conclusion of play on Saturday evening.
