Lourdes Heads to WHAC Title Game After Knocking Off #25 Indiana Tech

Lourdes made 16 three-pointers and shot 53.1% from beyond the arc on Saturday afternoon as the fourth-seeded Gray Wolves defeated 25th-ranked Indiana Tech 89-79 inside the Schaefer Center in Fort Wayne, Ind. to advance to the championship game of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament.

The Gray Wolves snapped the WHAC regular season champion Warriors 13-game winning streak.

"We shot the lights out," head coach Dennis Hopson said afterwards.  "We put two halves together and were pretty good on defense after going small.  We played tough today and were committed to winning the game."

The opening 20 minutes was close throughout, with neither team leading by more than five points.  Trailing 20-15, the Gray Wolves scored the next eight points to forge in front 23-20 after Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) drained a triple.  Lourdes went 5-for-7 from long range in the first 10 minutes.

The Warriors responded, with seven unanswered points of their own to build a 29-24 advantage, only to see the Gray Wolves pull back even at 31.  After nine lead changes and four ties, the two teams headed into the locker room tied at 40.

Little Anderson (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) and Holifield hit back-to-back triples to open the second half, giving Lourdes a six-point lead.  Indiana Tech answered with two straight threes of its own to pull back even.  Leading by one, a 10-2 Gray Wolves rush pushed the advantage to nine, 59-50 with 13 minutes to play.

The Gray Wolves kept extending the lead, as an Anderson three at the 10-minute mark put Lourdes up by 13, 67-54.  The lead was 14, 75-61, with eight minutes to play as Lourdes started the half 14-of-19 from the floor, including 6-of-8 from beyond the arc.

Ten straight points by the top-seeded Warriors pulled the hosts back within four, 75-71, at the five-minute mark.  Lourdes did not back down though.  Anderson, who finished the game 6-of-10 from long range, banked in a three-pointer as the shot clock expired with 2:50 to play and Charles Swain (Cincinnati, Ohio/North College Hill H.S.) picked up an offensive rebound on the next possession and scored with a put back.  Swain followed with another triple with 1:24 to play, pushing the lead back to 12, 87-75, putting the game on ice.

Anderson finished with a career-high 28 points while Holifield added 20 more.  Nick Welch (Temperance, Mich./Saint Mary Catholic Central H.S.) notched a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) chipped in 11 points and nine boards.

Lourdes finished shooting 53.1% from the floor for the afternoon, including 63.3% over the final 20 minutes.

Blake Davison led Indiana Tech (25-7) with 20 points while Rog Stein added 17 more.  The Warriors shot 48.4% from the field, including 8-of-15 (53.3%) from three-point range.

Lourdes (23-7) heads to Monday night's title game where the Gray Wolves will face third-seeded Madonna at 7 p.m. in Livonia, Mich.
