Eighth-ranked Lourdes atoned for one of its two Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference losses on Wednesday evening, defeating Siena Heights on the road 25-15, 25-20, 23-25, 25-15 inside the SHU Fieldhouse in Adrian, Mich.
The Gray Wolves hit a blistering .400 for the match with 56 kills, led by
Harrison McBean's (Melbourne, Australia/Northern College of the Arts) 14 kills on 19 swings and a .632 hitting percentage.
"We played well tonight," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "We started the match playing very efficient offensively and maintained our level throughout much of the match. Our defense and serve receive allowed our offense to perform at a very high level. This was a good win for us."
Lourdes put down 15 kills with just one error in the opening set while hitting .538. Leading 14-12, the Gray Wolves closed the stanza on an 11-3 run to take the early lead in the match. In set two, Lourdes limited the Saints to just .111 hitting. There were 10 ties and four lead changes, with Lourdes using a late four-point spurt to break an 18-18 deadlock.
In the third, Siena Heights scored five consecutive points late in the frame to build a 22-19 lead to extend the match, despite 17 kills from Lourdes in the set. The Gray Wolves never trailed in the fourth, using a 10-3 run to pull away. Lourdes held the Saints to just seven kills and a -.100 hitting mark in the set.
Jeff Lam (Richmond, B.C./Hugh McRoberts H.S.) had a team-high 17 kills and hit .417 for Lourdes while adding 10 digs and six blocks.
Eduardo Ayala (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Dom Bosco) added 10 kills as well while
Sawyer Schafer (Monroeville, Ohio/Monroeville H.S.) ran the offense and dished out 49 assists.
Elijah Fleming (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook H.S.) tallied seven blocks defensively while
Guga Heidrich (Braco do Norte, Brazil/Colegio Unificado) added 10 digs.
Ramon Matos led Siena Heights (13-5, 7-4 WHAC) with 21 kills.
Lourdes (14-4, 9-2) returns home on Saturday afternoon to entertain Goshen. First serve is set for 1 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
