Lourdes jumped out to a seven-goal halftime lead on Saturday evening and defeated Cleary 16-4 at Wildcat Stadium in the home and Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener for the Gray Wolves.
The win was the first for the Gray Wolves since a 15-9 triumph at Cleary on April 15, 2019.
"I cannot begin to express how happy and excited I am for this team," head coach
Sierra Wagoner said afterwards. "They deserved this first win of the season. They put in the work and it was worth it. This is the momentum we need to continue into the rest of conference play."
Amelia McCourt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Bloomfield Hills H.S.),
Sarah Przyojski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.), and
Jordin Rawski (Toledo, Ohio/Southview H.S.) each scored three time while
Erin Manley (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) and
Anastasia Weekley (Elyria, Ohio/Bedford H.S.) both found the back of the goal twice.
The Gray Wolves jumped in front 3-0 less than 10 minutes into the contest as Przyojski, Rawski, and Manley each tallied goals. After the Cougars broke through on the scoreboard, Lourdes added the next five tallies to build an 8-1 lead. McCourt had two goals in the run while the Gray Wolves also benefited from an own goal.
Holding a 10-3 lead at halftime,
Kayla Dillinger (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney H.S.) and Weekley both found the back of the cage within the first two minutes of the third quarter. Lourdes would score the game's final four goals as well, including
Sydney Duran's (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) first collegiate tally, on the way to the win.
Natalie Busen had three of Cleary's (1-3, 0-1 WHAC) four goals on the evening.
McCourt also had three assists for Lourdes for a six-point game while Przyojski added a helper as well.
Lourdes outshot Cleary 32-8 on the afternoon and held an 18-8 advantage in ground balls. Rawski led the way with four ground ball pickups for the Gray Wolves.
The Gray Wolves also held a 20-4 edge in draw controls, with McCourt registering 12 and Przyojski grabbing seven more.
"Coming off of a strong defensive performance in our last game, I knew we needed to focus on our offensive game more heading into this one," Wagoner added. "And I'd say the offense showed up tonight. All-Around, the team looked great."
Lourdes (1-1, 1-0) return home on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Bethel (Ind.). The opening draw is set for noon.
