Big Third Quarter Lifts Lourdes to Victory in WHAC Opener

Lourdes scored four times late in the third period to break a halftime deadlock on the way to a 14-11 victory over Concordia (Mich.) on Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

With the game tied at seven at intermission, Concordia struck first in the third before Tyler Pezzot (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek H.S.) evened the game just 21 seconds later.  The Cardinals retook the lead at the 3:35 mark before the Gray Wolves struck for four goals in a 52-second span.  Caden Louthan (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs H.S.) tied the game at nine before Chad Causley (Clinton Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse H.S.) gave the Gray Wolves the lead for good.  Louthan's fifth goal of the game increased the lead to two before Pezzot ended the spurt with his third tally of the day.  Pezzot also had three assists on the afternoon.

Nick Johnson (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) started Lourdes early in the fourth with a goal 41 seconds into the quarter before Causley added his third goal of the game at the 4:29 mark to make it 14-9.  The Cardinals would score a pair of late goals for the game's final margin.

Concordia led 5-3 after one quarter and had a 7-5 lead with 2:40 to play before halftime when Louthan scored the final two goals before the break to even the game.

Lourdes finished the game with a 42-34 edge in shots while George Hoexum (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern H.S.) made eight saves in the cage.

The Gray Wolves also held a 32-24 edge in ground balls and won 18 of the 29 faceoffs on the afternoon.  Ezequel Ceant (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach H.S.) won 16 of his 26 opportunities at the X while also collecting a team-high seven ground balls.

Ryan Iles led Concordia (0-5, 0-1 WHAC) with four goals and an assist while Sam Bowling made 15 saves.
