Lourdes wrapped up the home portion of schedule on Saturday afternoon, splitting a Senior Day doubleheader with Cleary. The Gray Wolves dropped the opener 6-5 before winning game two 6-4 at Gray Wolf Field.
Prior to the game, Lourdes honored its lone senior,
Ashleigh Riffle (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon H.S.).
"We were really pleased to get a win for Riffle on Senior Day," head coach
Caitlin Blanchard said afterwards. "She's been phenomenal for our team this year, not just with her play on the field, but also with her leadership. We are going to miss her next year."
Lourdes jumped in front early in game one, as
Megan Richardson (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) led of the first with a triple and scored two batters later on a
Brooke Albert (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights H.S.) single.
Cleary answered with two runs in the second before adding a run in the fourth. The Cougars lead swelled to five, 6-1, with a three-run fifth inning before the Gray Wolves tried to mount a comeback.
Albert tripled home two runs with two outs in the fifth but was thrown out at the plate trying to score on an overthrow. Lourdes added a run in the sixth on a two-out double by
Annalisse Palma (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview H.S.), scoring
Ella Leonard (Lorain, Ohio/Lorain H.S.).
In the seventh, Lourdes loaded the bases with one out and scored a run on Riffle's ground out, but could not plate the tying run.
Albert went 3-for-4 in the opener while
Maddy Bartos (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) added two more hits as the Gray Wolves finished the game with 11 total.
In game two, Lourdes took a 2-0 lead in the first. Richardson led off with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch while
Sophia Dauterman (Toledo, Ohio/Whiteford H.S.) doubled home Palma with two outs.
The lead grew to three as Albert delivered a RBI single in the third, plating Richardson who tallied her second double of the game.
Cleary (14-28, 3-11 WHAC) scored four times in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a pair of Lourdes errors, to take the lead, but the Gray Wolves immediately responded.
Emily Wallace (Thornville, Ohio/Lakewood H.S.) put Lourdes in front with a two-out, two-run single in the fourth before Albert followed with a run-scoring single to make it 6-4.
Ashley Roth (LaRue, Ohio/Elgin H.S.), who came on to retire the final out in the top of the fourth, did the rest for Lourdes to earn the win (2-4). She retired all 10 batters she faced, striking out three to earn the win (2-4) in relief.
Dauterman went 3-for-3 in the nightcap as Lourdes banged out 13 hits in total.
Lourdes (13-18, 7-9) returns to the diamond on Sunday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Livonia, Mich. to face 20
th-ranked Madonna. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at University Field.
