Lourdes wrapped up the 2022 baseball season on Saturday afternoon, winning the opener of a doubleheader 1-0 against Siena Heights before falling 4-2 in game two on Senior Day at Mercy Field.
The opener was a pitcher's duel that lasted just one hour and 18 minutes.
Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) went the distance for the Gray Wolves, allowing just one hit, a lead-off single in the second to earn the shutout (5-3). The Saints' Chase Molnar was nearly as good, allowing just four hits in his complete game effort, walking one.
The lone run in the opener came in the bottom of the fifth as
Harrison Jackson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake H.S.) launched a solo home run to left field to lead off the inning, his fourth round-tripper of the season. The blast provided Lourdes with its only offense in the win.
In game two, Lourdes jumped on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the fourth. Oehlers drew a two-out walk and
Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) singled to left. The ball got by the outfielder followed by a throwing error to the plate, allowing Oehlers to score the game's first run.
Wyatt Smith (Sycamore, Ohio/Wynford H.S.) carried a no-hitter into the fifth and did not yield a run until the sixth when the Saints tied the game. He left after six innings of work, allowing just three hits.
Lourdes retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Jackson singled with one out and scored one batter later on a double by
Gabe Scott (Curtis, Ohio/Genoa H.S.).
Siena Heights (18-32, 5-16 WHAC) tied the game in the eighth before scoring what proved to be the two winning runs in the ninth, taking advantage of two walks and two hits.
Ammons had two of Lourdes four hits in game two, providing the team's only multi-hit game of the day.
Lourdes finishes the season 25-22 overall, its first winning campaign in program history with a school record for wins. The Gray Wolves were 9-13 in WHAC play.
