Lourdes hung with Aquinas throughout the opening 30 minutes, but the Saints pulled away in the second half and defeated the Gray Wolves 20-7 on Saturday afternoon at the AQ Athletic Field in Grand Rapids, Mich.
"We put up a great fight today against a really competitive team," head coach
Sierra Wagoner said afterwards. "I see this team improving game-by-game. I couldn't have asked for a better first half from our offense today, as they worked together and very hard to put points on the board. As we go into the final week of the season, I look forward to more improvements and good play from this team."
Aquinas (10-5, 6-1 WHAC) scored the first two goals less than three minutes into the contest, but the Gray Wolves answered immediately.
Sarah Przyojski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) and
Amelia McCourt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Bloomfield H.S.) registered back-to-back tallies to tie the game, only to see the Saints respond with three more goals to end the opening quarter.
McCourt found the back of the cage twice to open the second quarter, again bringing the Gray Wolves within one. Aquinas answered with eight of the next nine goals before
Sydney Duran's (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) goal with 51 seconds left before halftime made it a 13-6 game.
The Saints scored all five goals of the third quarter and added two more in the fourth before
Anastasia Weekley (Elyria, Ohio/Bedford H.S.) scored the game's final goal for the Gray Wolves.
Aquinas outshot Lourdes 38-20 on the afternoon with
Maddie Wadesisi (Cleveland, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) making nine saves in goal for the Gray Wolves.
Lourdes won 17 of 28 draw controls, including seven each from Przyojski and McCourt while Aquinas finished with a 27-18 edge ground balls. Duran led Lourdes with six ground balls.
Lourdes (2-6, 2-5) will close out the road portion of the schedule on Wednesday evening, traveling to Fort Wayne, Ind. to face Indiana Tech. The opening draw is set for 5 p.m. at the Warrior Athletic Field.
