Lourdes closed out the non-conference portion of the 2022 season in victorious fashion on Saturday, defeating Point Park 2-1 at Wildcat Stadium.
"It was a great start with a fantastic goal from Diego," head coach
Matt Johnson said afterwards. "Again, we had some success keeping the ball and controlling the game. The defensive side is still a bit of a work in progress, but we're happy with the win going into the WHAC season."
The Gray Wolves wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard. Playing the opening kickoff deep into their own end,
Daniel Mirlach (Windach, Germany/Ignaz Kogler Gymnasium) played a long ball across the field to
Diego Pereira (Asuncion, Paraguay/Cristo Rey), who fired the ball into the upper 90 just 13 seconds into the contest, the fastest goal to start a match in program history.
Point Park (1-5) evened the match with 8:31 to play before intermission. Matheus Lima sent a cross into the box from the right side that deflected off goalkeeper
Alex Brock (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) where Moritz Sarfert picked up the loose ball and scored to tie the match at one.
Lourdes held a 7-2 shot advantage over the opening 45 minutes, but the two sides went into the break deadlocked.
Jonas Kreutzberg (Alfter, Germany/Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium) notched the match-winner for the Gray Wolves with just under 30 minutes remaining in the match. He fired a shot from the right side of the box to the far post for his second goal of the season.
The Gray Wolves finished the match with a 16-7 shot advantage, with Brock making four saves in net. Max Davila had six saves for the Pioneers.
Lourdes (2-4-1) will have two weeks off before returning to the pitch to open Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play against Cornerstone on Sept. 24. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
