Lourdes Offense Erupts in Win over Concordia

Alex Hartl (Sigmarszell, Germany/Progenius Heidenheim) needed just over 10 minutes to register a hat trick on Wednesday afternoon and Lourdes scored four times in the first 12 minutes of the match on the way to defeating Concordia (Mich.) 5-2 at Wildcat Stadium.

Hartl started the scoring with the second fastest goal in program history, firing a blast off the top of the crossbar and into the side netting just 21 seconds into the contest.  The Gray Wolves took advantage of a Cardinal turnover and Austin Gibbons (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) found Hartl about 35 yards out to start the scoring.

Concordia (1-10-4, 0-5-3 WHAC) found the equalizer just over five minutes later as Clemens Gehlich took a feed in the middle of the penalty area and turned and fired to make it 1-1.

The Gray Wolves retook the lead with three goals in less than five minutes.  Hartl received a feed from Victor Espinoza (Asuncion, Paraguay/Cristo Rey) and fired from about 30 yards out over the top of a leaping goalkeeper for his second tally of the match.

Hartl, who had yet to score in his collegiate career and was making just his third appearance for the Gray Wolves, completed the hat trick at the 10:10 mark.  Diego Pereira (Asuncion, Paraguay/Cristo Rey) was racing up field as the netminder was backtracking and found Hartl on the right who was able to score going one-on-one.  The hat trick is the 11th in program history.

Gibbons then made it 4-1 Lourdes with his second tally of the season at the 11:45 mark.  He received a pass along the goal line from Martin Coronel (Asuncion, Paraguay/San Jose) and volleyed it into the net for his second goal of the season.

Gibbons added his second tally, and fifth point of the match, in the 33rd minute, scoring from the left side with Sebastian Bogarin (Asuncion, Paraguay/Sergrado Corazon de Jesus) picking up the assist.

Lourdes carried the 5-1 lead into halftime, outshooting the Cardinals 10-7 over the opening 45 minutes.

Concordia's Mitchell Kim would score the lone goal in the second half, as the Cardinals outshot Lourdes 5-4 in the stanza.

Alex Brock (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) made two saves in goal for the Gray Wolves to earn the victory.

Lourdes (3-6-5, 3-3-2) takes to the road for the final time during the 2023 regular season on Saturday afternoon, heading to Adrian, Mich. to battle Siena Heights.  Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at O'Laughlin Stadium.
