Lourdes closed out the regular season schedule on Saturday, celebrating Senior Day with a 5-3 victory over Michigan-Dearborn at Wildcat Stadium.
Prior to the Gray Wolves' fourth straight victory, the team honored the 11 members of the 2023 senior class.
"This was a great way to end our regular season and fitting that we had some seniors step up with big plays on Senior Night," head coach
Matt Johnson said. "We knew a win gave us a good chance to finish in the top-four and host a first round playoff game, which was a big goal of ours coming into the season, so we're very happy tohave gotten that done."
When the match kicked off, it was the Wolverines striking first as Andrew Schwartz converted a penalty kick just 2:22 into the contest.
Lourdes responded with a penalty kick of its own at the 4:48 mark and
Martin Coronel (Asuncion, Paraguay/San Jose H.S.) stepped up and converted for his fourth goal of the season to tie the match at one.
The Gray Wolves took the lead for good in the 26
th minute as
Federico Reali (Ceprano, Italy/Liceo Sulpicio) sent a corner into the box that
Jakob Walther (Milan, Mich./Milan H.S.) headed in for his first goal as a Gray Wolf. With less than 10 minutes to play before halftime,
Jannik Hofmann (Bad Hersfeld, Germany/Modell Schule Obersberg) scored his first collegiate goal after receiving a ball from Coronel and lofting it up over the Michigan-Dearborn netminder.
Leading 3-1 to start the second half, Hofmann netted his second goal of the match after receiving a pass from
Victor Espinoza (Asuncion, Paraguay/Cristo Rey).
Xavier Walser cut the Lourdes advantage to two with a goal just over five minutes later before
Rolando Benitez (Asuncion, Paraguay/Maria Serrana) capped the Gray Wolf scoring with 30:14 to play on a goal in which
Leandro Bisanzio Pereira (Gutersloh, Germany/Stadtisches Gymnasium Gutersloh) was credited with the assist.
Nicolas Pulcini scored Michigan-Dearborn's (3-8-5, 2-5-4 WHAC) final goal with 23 seconds to play on a free kick from 19 yards out at the top of the box.
Lourdes outshot the Wolverines 12-11 for the match with
Alex Brock (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) making three saves for the Gray Wolves. Jack Rogers made the same number of stops for Michigan-Dearborn.
"We have a big week in front of us moving into the playoffs so hopefully we can carry this with us and have a strong showing starting next Saturday," Johnson added.
Lourdes (6-6-5, 6-3-2) will open play in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament next Saturday, Nov. 4 in the quarterfinals.
