Lourdes picked up its first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory of the season, as well as the team's first road win, on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves defeated Michigan-Dearborn 76-61 inside the UMD Fieldhouse in Dearborn, Mich.
Â
"We settled in after going back-and-forth early and once we really started seeing the open shots and rim attacks in our offense, the game started moving well for our team," head coach
Tandy Bradford said afterwards. "We want to continue building off our defensive effort and communication so today was a great day for building that. There isn't a team in the WHAC that isn't going to compete every play so it's great to get a W on the road."
Â
The lead changed hands five times in the opening period before Lourdes scored the final five points of the stanza to take an 18-14 advantage, a lead the Gray Wolves would not relinquish after the opening 10 minutes. Lourdes extended the run with the first seven points of the second quarter to build the lead to 11 just two minutes into the period. The lead would swell to as many as 17 before intermission with the Gray Wolves taking a 47-31 lead into the break.
Â
After Lourdes scored the first basket of the third, Michigan-Dearborn tallied eight straight points to pull within 10, 49-39, before the Gray Wolves answered with seven consecutive points of their own. A 10-0 spurt by the Wolverines spanning the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarters allowed the hosts to close to within seven before
Shae Pedroza's (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) three-pointer stopped the run and allowed the Gray Wolves to put the game away.
Â
Nakiya Sigman (Lima, Ohio/Lima Senior H.S.) led Lourdes with 16 points while Pedroza tallied 14 more to go along with four assists and four steals.Â
Halle Barnett (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) chipped in 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds while
Macie Stringfellow (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) tallied 10 more.
Â
Lourdes shot 43.5% from the floor for the game and committed just eight turnovers while forcing 19 miscues from the Wolverines.
Â
Maya Barakat led Michigan-Dearborn (1-4, 0-1 WHAC) with 21 points and 11 rebounds while Morgan Miller added 14 points.
Â
Lourdes (2-2, 1-1) will return home on Tuesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Ohio Christian. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
