Fourteenth-ranked Lourdes remained undefeated on the season Saturday afternoon, moving to 10-0 overall after defeating Concordia (Mich.) 83-64 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) tallied a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end, while
Shaunn Monroe (Charleston, W. Va./Fairborn [Ohio] H.S.) added 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting while handing out five assists.
Jackie Harris (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales H.S.) also finished in double figures, scoring 17 points as all three players played all 40 minutes.
Nic Borojevich (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton H.S.) came off the bench to add three three-pointers.
"I thought Shaunn and Nic did an excellent job today," head coach
Dennis Hopson said. "Nic hit some big shots."
Lourdes jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead, scoring five points on the game's first possession after
Ethan Damerum (Cressage, England/Chornwood Riders H.S.) scored inside and was fouled. After missing the free throw, Harris knocked down a three-pointer and the Gray Wolves never looked back.
"I was impressed with our defense the first 10 minutes of the game," Hopson added. "It was very, very good."
The Gray Wolf lead grew to 16, 25-9, just over eight minutes into the game before the Cardinals scored eight straight points to begin a 19-6 run as the visitors pulled within three, 31-28, at the 4:47 mark of the first half. Holifield stopped the run scoring inside and Harris followed with an old-fashioned three-point play as Lourdes pushed the lead back to 10, 40-30, at intermission.
"Give Concordia credit," Hopson added. "They stayed the course and played solid basketball to get back in the game."
Concordia was never able to cut the deficit to single digits in the second half. Lourdes pushed the lead to 20, 60-40, eight minutes into the second half and maintained at least a 13-point lead the rest of the way.
Lourdes shot 52.2% from the floor for the game while limiting the Cardinals to just a 41.8% clip. The Gray Wolves also held a 45-26 edge on the glass, including a 14-7 advantage on the offensive end, leading to 15 second chance points. Lourdes outscored Concordia 46-42 in the paint.
Zavion McClendon led Concordia (5-5, 3-4 WHAC) with 19 points while Nate Brighton added 16 more.
Lourdes (10-0, 6-0) will take two weeks off before returning to the hardwood in an exhibition game against Grand Valley State on Dec. 30 to close out the calendar year. Tip-off against the Lakers is set for 4 p.m. inside of GVSU Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale, Mich.
