Lourdes recorded its third consecutive victory on Saturday evening to remain undefeated in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play, downing Cornerstone 25-21, 25-15, 29-27 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"This was a pretty sound win for us as we never really gave up momentum and were in control of our side of the net for most of the match," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "We hit efficiently, served aggressively, and blocked and played defense well."
Eduardo Ayala (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Dom Bosco) put down 17 kills to lead the offensive attack while
Jaber Badarne (Arrabe, Israel/Hof Hasharon) added nine kills and hit .350. The Gray Wolves hit .257 on the evening with
Cauan Reuter (Blumenau, Brazil/Escola Barao do Rio Branco) handing out a team-high 21 assists.
With the opening set tied at seven, Lourdes scored three quick points to take the lead for good and used another three-point spurt late in the stanza to capture frame. In the second, a 7-0 outburst put the Gray Wolves in front 22-11 as the hosts held Cornerstone to a -.065 hitting mark in the set.
Lourdes raced out to a 10-3 lead in the third and still led 20-15 when the Golden Eagles made a late run. A 7-1 run by Cornerstone gave the Golden Eagles a pair of set points at 24-22. Lourdes fought off those two, as well as three more before scoring the final three points to complete the sweep.
Gabriel Vianna (Belo Horizonte, razil/Colegio do Instituto Padre Machado) tallied a team-high 11 digs while
Vinicius Lopes (Brusque, Brazil/Colegio Osvaldo Carvalho) had five blocks, including four of the solo variety.
David Galanes led Cornerstone (8-3, 3-3 WHAC) with 12 kills and hit .300 while Kyi Jagorin had a match-high 12 digs.
Lourdes (6-3, 4-0) returns to the road on Tuesday evening as the Gray Wolves travel to Mount Vernon, Ohio to face Mount Vernon Nazarene. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside Ariel Arena.
