Lourdes wrapped up its first weekend of the season on Sunday afternoon, dropping both games of a doubleheader to Pikeville by the scores of 12-3 and 10-5 at Johnny LeMaster Field in Pikeville, Ky.
Â
"With our veteran team, I was expecting more from us this weekend," head coach
Josh Bradford said afterwards. "There were a few bright spots, but overall we need to play better. It starts with the guys on the mound. There was a lot of self-inflicted damage that we could not overcome. We'll get back to work this week and be better next time out."
Â
Steve Haugh (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) put the Gray Wolves in front in the opening inning of game one with a RBI single only to see the Bears respond with three runs in the bottom of the inning.Â
A.J. Brinson (Bloomington, Ind./South H.S.) cut the Lourdes deficit to one, 3-2, with his run-scoring double in the third.
Â
Pikeville retook a two-run advantage with a tally in the fourth before Haugh's second RBI of the day made it a 4-3 game in the fifth. That would be the last run of the game for the Gray Wolves though, as the Bears plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth and four more in the sixth.
Â
Haugh and Brinson each had two hits for the Gray Wolves in the opener while
Matt McEachern (Burlington, Ont./Hayden Secondary H.S.) went 3-for-3 to pace the offense.
Â
Bryn Biemiller (Newmarket, Ont./Bill Crothers Secondary H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1), allowing four runs on three hits in four innings of work.
Â
Pikeville (6-3) took the lead in the second inning of game two with a single run before Lourdes answered with three in the third.Â
Hunter Mix (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton H.S.) tied the game with a sacrifice fly before
Jackson Kennedy's (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) double gave the Gray Wolves the lead. An error followed, making it 3-1 Lourdes.
Â
The Bears responded with five runs in the bottom of the third and added three more in the fifth to break the game open before Mix and
Zack Mon (Columbus, Ohio/Westland H.S.) both drove home runs in the sixth for the Gray Wolves' final runs.
Â
Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) took the loss (0-1) in game two, yielding six runs on four hits in three innings on the hill.
Â
Lourdes (1-3) will have two weeks off before returning to the diamond on March 4 in Lawrenceville, Ga. The Gray Wolves will face Clarke at 11 a.m. and host Georgia Gwinnett at 5 p.m.
