Lourdes opened defense of its Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament title on Thursday evening, cruising to a 107-66 victory over Concordia (Mich.) in the quarterfinal round inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"We had some good things we can build upon," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "We shot the lights out and are playing a lot faster and not allowing people to set up their defense. Tonight, we did a nice job grabbing 45 rebounds and we got 20 points off their 11 turnovers."
The Gray Wolves shot 57.7% from the floor for the night and made 20-of-35 (57.1%) three-point field goal attempts on the evening.
Jackie Harris (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) tallied 33 points, shooting 9-of-14 from long range, while also grabbing eight rebounds.
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) added 18 points on 7-of-9 from the floor while
Little Anderson (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) finished with 11 points.
Lourdes was on fire in the first half, making 10 of its first 12 shots from the floor while building a 25-13 lead just over seven minutes into the contest. After the Cardinals cut the lead to five, 26-21, the Gray Wolves answered with a 25-4 spurt, including four triples from Harris. Lourdes started the game 11-of-14 from beyond the arc.
Harris finished the first half with seven three-pointers and 25 points as the Gray Wolves took a 55-33 lead into the locker room. Lourdes shot 62.5% from the floor in the opening stanza.
The Gray Wolves never looked back coming out of halftime, pushing the lead to 30, midway through the second half. Another 16-2 spurt in the final minutes pushed the advantage to as many as 43 in the second half.
Lourdes committed just eight turnovers on the night and outrebounded the Cardinals 45-27. Holifield handed out seven assists and grabbed seven boards while
Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown H.S.) had six more helpers without a turnover as Lourdes dished out 25 assists on the night.
Zac Clark led seventh-seeded Concordia (9-20) with 14 points while Kip French added 11 more.
Lourdes (22-7), the tournament's second seed, will host third-seeded Madonna on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
