Lourdes jumped out to an early lead on Wednesday afternoon, but Thomas More battled back to defeat the Gray Wolves 12-5 at Thomas More Stadium in Crestview Hills, Ky.
Â
"Offensively, we were missing the big hit with runners in scoring position," head coach
Josh Bradford said afterwards. Having 16 hits and only scoring five runs doesn't happen very often. Thomas More didn't make any errors and didn't give us any free bases after the first inning. We needed to do a better job of controlling the momentum."
Â
Lourdes took advantage of four Saints walks, three wild pitches, and three stolen bases to score a pair of runs in the opening inning. Thomas More tied the game in the bottom of the inning, only to see the Gray Wolves retake the lead in the third. A double by
Hunter Mix (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton H.S.) put Lourdes in front 4-2.
Â
Thomas More (14-10) scored a single run in the bottom of the third and took a 5-4 lead with two more in the fifth. The Saints broke the game open in the sixth, scoring six times on just four hits, capitalizing on a pair of Gray Wolf errors.
Â
The final Gray Wolf run came in the ninth as
Joey Oehlers (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) drove in Mix with a groundout.
Â
Josh Hare (Simcoe, Ont./Holy Trinity H.S.) went 4-for-4 at the plate for Lourdes while
Ryan Jagodzinski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Rossford H.S.) had a three-hit game.
Â
Lourdes (4-7) is scheduled to open up Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host 22
nd-ranked Indiana Tech. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Mercy Field.
