Upcoming in Gray Wolves Softball: After weather played issues several times last week, Lourdes wraps up its road trip on Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader at Siena Heights. The Gray Wolves return home on Friday to host Cornerstone for a twinbill before entertaining Aquinas on Saturday afternoon in doubleheader action.
Head Coach Caitlin Blanchard: In her second season on the Lourdes bench,
Caitlin Blanchard has a 20-35 (.364) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as a collegiate head coach. She is the only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Siena Heights holds a 12-9 all-time series advantage over the Gray Wolves dating back to April 21, 2013. Last season the two schools split a doubleheader at Gray Wolf Field with Lourdes winning the opener 3-2 before the Saints took the nightcap 7-4. Siena Heights holds a 5-1 edge in games played in Adrian, Mich. Cornerstone is 12-10 all-time against Lourdes in a series that began March 4, 2013. Last year in Grand Rapids, Mich., the Golden Eagles won the opener 3-1 before the Gray Wolves rebounded with a 7-2 win in game two. Cornerstone is 4-0 against Lourdes at Gray Wolf Field and 8-5 against Lourdes in Sylvania. Aquinas is 13-6 in the all-time series against Lourdes going back to April 26, 2013. The two schools split a pair of games in Grand Rapids last year, with Lourdes winning the opener 10-5 before the Saints took game two 11-3. Aquinas won the only two previous games at Gray Wolf Field and are 7-3 against Lourdes all-time in Sylvania.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Thomas More won both games of a doubleheader from Lourdes on Wednesday (March 21) by scores of 3-2 and 6-5. Weather postponed the doubleheaders at Saint Francis (Ill.) on Thursday and Rochester (Mich.) on Saturday. Sunday, the Gray Wolves opened WHAC play falling 4-1 and 5-2 at Lawrence Tech.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints have dropped eight straight games after falling 2-0 and 5-0 at Concordia (Mich.) on Sunday. Shyann Truax leads the offense batting .415 with three home runs and nine runs batted in. Courtnee Chappetta has a team-high 12 RBI for an offense hitting .299 as a team. The pitching staff sports a 4.76 earned run average. Truax is 3-8 in the circle with a 4.22 ERA in 68.0 innings of work.
Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles enter the week having dropped a doubleheader to Madonna 6-0 and 13-3 on Friday. Cornerstone hosts Cleary on Tuesday before visiting Lourdes. Delaney Wilson is batting a team-leading .404 with nine runs batted in this season. The Golden Eagle offense is hitting .249 while the pitching staff sports a 3.81 earned run average. Alyssa Braam leads Cornerstone in the circle with a 2-4 record and a 2.24 ERA in 34.1 innings pitched.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints have won nine straight games entering the week after sweeping Rochester (Mich.) 9-0 and 7-0 on Sunday at home. Aquinas visits Alma on Thursday before heading to Lourdes. Jaden Delchambre is batting .435 this season while Taylor Charon has 15 runs batted in. Courtney Hardin has hit four home runs for an offense batting .294 on the year. The pitching staff sports a 1.54 earned run average. Leah Ash is 8-2 with a 1.33 ERA in 58.0 innings of work in the circle.
Schedule Updates: Lourdes has rescheduled all three of its postponements today. The Gray Wolves will host Malone on April 4 and travel to Saint Francis (Ill.) and Rochester (Mich.) on April 10 and 12 respectively to make up those doubleheaders.
Freshmen Swinging a Hot Bat: A pair of rookies have led the Gray Wolf offense through the first 18 games of the season.
Maddie Darrah is hitting .382 (18-for-46) with nine doubles and slugging .587 in her rookie season. Darrah has scored six times and driven in seven.
Olivia Hickman, another freshman, has 17 hits in 50 at bats and is second in the team in batting average (.340). She has eight RBI and has scored four times.
Dealing in the Circle: Freshman
Berlynn Keller has led the Gray Wolf pitching staff in the circle thus far this season. The rookie is 3-6 with a 3.24 earned run average. In a team-leading 54.0 innings of work, she has 28 strikeouts while limiting opposing hitters to a .277 batting average.
Going Deep: Brooke Albert and
Annalisse Palma both cleared the fence for their second home runs of the season last week. Albert is also tied for the team lead with eight runs batted in while Palma's first homer this year was an inside-the-park variety.
Gray Wolves Tabbed 10th in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was picked to finish in 10th place in the WHAC this season according to the league head coaches in their annual preseason balloting. The Gray Wolves were selected just behind Siena Heights and just ahead of Cleary in the poll. Michigan-Dearborn was tabbed as the preseason favorites.
