Lourdes returned home to Gray Wolf Field for just the second time this season on Friday afternoon, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Cornerstone by scores of 4-2 in nine innings and 10-6.
The opener was a pitcher's dual until the seventh as Lourdes'
Berlynn Keller (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) limited the Golden Eagles to just two hits through six innings while Cornerstone's Mikayla Meade allowed the same against the Gray Wolves.
Cornerstone broke through with an unearned run in the top of the seventh to take the lead before the Gray Wolves forced extra innings with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame.
Brooke Albert (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights H.S.) doubled to lead off the inning and
Annalisse Palma (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) tied the game with a two-out single.
The game remained tied until the ninth when Molly Poole hit a two-run home run and Maddy Chatman hit a solo shot to put the visitors in front 4-1. The Gray Wolves plated a run in the bottom of the inning as Albert scored on a Palma groundout, but Lourdes left the tying runners on second and third.
Albert and
Maddy Bartos (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) each had two of the Gray Wolves' six total hits in the opener.
In game two, Cornerstone (10-10, 4-2 WHAC) sent 10 batters to the plate in the opening inning, scoring five unearned runs after taking advantage of an error and three walks. Lourdes answered with four of its own in the bottom half of the first.
Maddie Darrah (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) doubled home the first run and
Olivia Hickman (Trenton, Mich./Trenton H.S.) followed with a sacrifice fly.
Megan Richardson (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) singled in the third run before scoring herself on a wild pitch.
Darrah tied the game in the second with a RBI single that plated
Mallori Bradley (Zanesville, Ohio/Maysville H.S.), only to see Cornerstone retake the lead with a run in the third. The Golden Eagles extended their lead with a tally in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Emily Wallace (Thornville, Ohio/Lakewood H.S.) led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run and the Gray Wolves loaded the bases later in the inning with two outs but could not produce another run.
Richardson went 4-for-4 in game two while Darrah and Bartos both had two hits in the nightcap.
Lourdes (5-15, 0-4) remains at home on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain Aquinas. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m. at Gray Wolf Field.
