Lourdes Season Ends with Loss at Georgetown in NAIA Tournament

Trailing by 19 at halftime, Lourdes cut its deficit to four late on Tuesday evening, but in the end eighth-ranked Georgetown (Ky.) ended the Gray Wolves' season with a 67-58 victory in the first round of the NAIA Tournament inside Davis-Reid Alumni Gym in Georgetown, Ky.

"The guys couldn't make shots in the beginning," head coach Dennis Hopson said afterwards.  "You can't win games scoring 15 points in the first half.  The defense wasn't bad, we just couldn't make shots.  We battled to try to get back in it, but it's hard.  We were able to outscore them by 10 in the second half but it wasn't enough."

Lourdes made just 5-of-26 field goal attempts in the opening half as the host Tigers built a 34-15 lead at intermission.

The Gray Wolves tried to battle back in the second half, starting with six straight points to start the final 20 minutes. Trailing 44-28 with 14 minutes to play, Lourdes went on a 14-5 run to pull within seven at the 8:30 mark.  After Georgetown pushed the lead back to 11 a minute later, the Gray Wolves scored 10 of the next 13 points, closing to within four, 57-53, at the 3:13 mark on a three-pointer by Little Anderson (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.).

Lourdes had a chance to cut it to a one possession game but turned the ball over and Georgetown answered with a three-pointer, pushing the lead back to seven.  The Gray Wolves continued to battle, with a lay-in by Anderson with 1:41 left against cutting the deficit to four, 61-57.  Georgetown answered with a second chance tip-in and made free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) led Lourdes with 19 points while Anderson added 15.  Charles Swain (Cincinnati, Ohio/North College Hill H.S.) also finished in double figures with 11 points.  The Gray Wolves shot 51.4% from the floor in the second half but finished at just 37.7% for the night.  Lourdes also made just 7-of-15 (46.7%) free throws.

Jake Ohmer led Georgetown (27-5) with 16 points while Rashad Bishop added 14 more off the bench.  The Tigers shot 47.2% from the floor to overcome 15 turnovers.

Lourdes finishes its season 22-9 overall, the second most wins in program history.
