Lourdes Opens Season Shutting Out Roosevelt 4-0

Lourdes opened the 2023 season on Sunday afternoon, scoring four times in the opening 37 minutes on the way to a 4-0 clean sheet over Roosevelt at Wildcat Stadium.

"We couldn't have asked for a better start to the season and the home opener," head coach Jackie Phillips said afterwards.  "While we still have a great deal to refine, we are pleased with the work rate and level of intensity that they brought to the match today."

The Gray Wolves opened the scoring just 15:33 into the match as Keira Boskovich (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley H.S.) sent a long ball ahead up the left sideline to Kayla Dillinger (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney H.S.) who finished for the first goal of the season.

Less than eight minutes later, Boskovich started the play again, sending in a cross from the left to the near post and Taylir Lynam (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania H.S.) converted for her first collegiate goal in her college debut.

Just 2:25 later, Laura Rincon (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Senora de la Merced) tallied her first goal at Lourdes, knocking home a rebound after Kayden Firsdon's (Luckey, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.) shot was saved, increasing the lead to 3-0 just over 25 minutes into the season.

Firsdon added her second assist of the match with 8:08 to play before halftime, setting up Sydney Woodring (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.).  Firsdon sent a cross in from the right and Woodring knocked in her first collegiate goal.

Lourdes maintained its four-goal advantage throughout the second half, finishing the match with a 13-9 shot advantage, including an 8-5 edge on goal.

Emmy Rodger (Romeo, Mich./Romeo H.S.) and Samarah Arendsen (Zeeland, Mich./West H.S.) combined for the shutout, with Rodger making three saves and Arendsen making two stops.

Roxana Herrera made three second half saves for Roosevelt (0-1).

The Gray Wolves' four goals were the most in a season opener since 2018 when Lourdes scored four times in a 4-0 victory at La Roche.  The four tallies also matched the highest goal output for the team during the 2022 season.

Lourdes (1-0) will return to action on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Mishawaka, Ind. to battle Bethel (Ind.).  Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Morey Field.
