Lourdes won the first two sets of its season on Wednesday evening only to see Spring Arbor rally to take the final three stanzas and defeat the Gray Wolves 22-25, 22-25, 25-12, 25-21, 15-6 inside McDonald Athletic Center in Spring Arbor, Mich.
"This was a tough one," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "We were playing well and forcing them to make errors and then they started doing the same thing to us. It was not a bad way to kick off the season, but we will need to execute at a higher level this season."
Trailing 8-3 early in the first, Lourdes scored six of the next seven points to even the set at nine. There would be 17 ties in the set before the Gray Wolves scored four of the final five points to build the early lead in the match. Lourdes would trail 14-7 in set two before a 9-2 run allowed the Gray Wolves to pull even. Tied at 21, Lourdes would again score four of the final five to build a 2-0 lead in the match.
After hitting .194 in the opening set and holding the Cougars to .000 in set two, Lourdes committed 11 attack errors and swung at a -.147 clip in the third. Spring Arbor jumped out to a 9-4 lead and closed with an 11-2 run to extend the match. In the fourth, the Gray Wolves were within one, 16-15, when Spring Arbor scored the next four points on the way to evening the match.
Lourdes never led in the fifth, and the two teams switched sides with the Cougars in front 8-6 before the hosts closed the match scoring the final seven points to complete the comeback.
Kylee McBride (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge H.S.) led Lourdes with 15 kills and 16 digs while hitting .189 and
Macey Zinser (Bucyrus, Ohio/Wynford H.S.) added 13 more kills.
Miyana Dishroon (Woodhaven, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) ran the offense which hit .012 on the night, handing out 37 total assists while tallying 13 digs.
Arleena Willer (Perrysburg, Ohio/Toledo Christian H.S.), making her collegiate debut, had 29 digs to lead the defense while Dishroon added four blocks at the net.
Kendall Bollenbacher had 13 kills to pace Spring Arbor (4-5) while Keely Hinzman had seven blocks, including four of the solo variety, and four service aces.
Lourdes (0-1) will open the home portion of its schedule on Saturday afternoon, entertaining Saint Xavier. First serve is set for 3 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
