Lourdes scored early in each half on Saturday evening as the Gray Wolves opened Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play with a 2-0 victory on the road at Cornerstone inside the Soccer Stadium in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Â
"This was a solid overall team win tonight to earn us three big points against a quality opponent on the road," head coach
Jackie Phillips said afterwards. "We were extremely pleased with the girls approach to the game and how they executed the concepts we worked on this week."
Â
Kiera Boskovich (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley H.S.) put the Gray Wolves in front just 6:16 into the match, volleying in a ball from the top of the box over a leaping Golden Eagle netminder for her team-leading third goal of the season. Boskovich now has nine points on the year.
Â
Lourdes took the 1-0 lead into intermission as
Emmy Rodger (Romeo, Mich./Romeo H.S.) made four first half saves for the Gray Wolves to keep the hosts off the scoreboard.
Â
Kayden Firsdon (Luckey, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.) netted her first collegiate goal 3:14 into the second half to give the Gray Wolves all the insurance they would need. She picked up a loose ball near the top of the box and fired it into the upper 90.
Â
Cornerstone (4-2, 0-1 WHAC) outshot Lourdes 12-11 for the night, with Rodger making six saves between the posts for the Gray Wolves. Morgan Scholten also had six stops for the Golden Eagles.
Â
Lourdes (4-2-1, 1-0) will remain on the road Wednesday afternoon, taking a trip to Lima, Ohio to face the University of Northwestern Ohio. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Racer Stadium.
