Lourdes Battles to Second Straight Draw Wednesday at Holy Cross

For the second consecutive match, Lourdes played 90 minutes without determining a winner as the Gray Wolves and Holy Cross (Ind.) battled to a 1-1 draw at Saints Field in Notre Dame, Ind.

"I thought we struggled a little playing through their press in the first half, but in the second half we were much better and we were able to create three or four really good chances to put the game away," head coach Matt Johnson said.  "Unfortunately, we were not able to do so.  Credit Holy Cross for scrapping and fighting and getting themselves a goal."

Lourdes broke through on the scoreboard for the first time this season just 8:46 into the match.  Hussein Sbeiti (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn H.S.) started the play at the top of the box and found Rolando Benitez (Asuncion, Paraguay/Maria Serrana) on the right side.  Benitez fired a blast past goalkeeper Isaias Rubio to put the Gray Wolves in front.

"It was nice to finally get on the score sheet with a great pass by Huss and an even better shot by Rolando," Johnson added.

The Gray Wolves maintained the 1-0 lead despite being outshot 6-4 in the opening 45 minutes.

Lourdes had a chance to double its lead 20 minutes into the second half, but Rubio made a diving save on a penalty kick.  The Saints then evened the match on a goal by Isa Sayeed with 10:20 to play in the match.

The Gray Wolves held a 13-9 shot edge in the second half to finish the night with a 17-15 advantage, but Rubio made eight saves for Holy Cross (2-2-1) while Yianni Kanellopoulos (Northville, Mich./Northville H.S.) made three stops in net for Lourdes.

"We're looking forward to getting another crack at it on Saturday against a really good Huntington team," Johnson concluded.

Lourdes (0-1-2) returns to Wildcat Stadium on Saturday evening to entertain Huntington with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
