After dropping the opening set on Saturday afternoon, 14
th-ranked Lourdes bounced back to defeat Siena Heights 23-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-20 inside the SHU Fieldhouse in Adrian, Mich.
"Once again we had to battle to get this win," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "We need to steady out our side of the net to put ourselves in better positions. Our serve and pass should be our foundation, but it has been shaky. We will focus on that, so it returns as a strength."
Eduardo Ayala (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Dom Bosco) put down a match-high 17 kills and hit .593 for the match while
Tomas Olak (Rowville, Australia/Mazenod College) added nine more while swinging at a .360 clip.
Charlie Harr (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard H.S.) had eight kills on 10 swings, posting a .700 hitting percentage, while registering eight blocks defensively.
Joey Bianco (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder H.S.) ran the Lourdes offense that hit .330 on the day, handing out 37 assists.
Siena Heights raced an 18-12 lead in the opening set only to see Lourdes score nine of the next 10 points to take a two-point edge. The Saints would close the set on a 5-1 spurt though to take the early lead in the match after recording five first set service aces.
Lourdes never trailed in the second, hitting .417 as a team. The Gray Wolves built a quick 8-3 lead and never allowed the Saints to closer than three the rest of the stanza on the way to evening the match. In the third, Lourdes hit .524 with just one error while limiting Siena Heights to a .031 hitting percentage. Trailing 10-8, the Gray Wolves went on a 12-3 run to take control and the lead in the match.
The fourth set saw Lourdes tallied four aces of its own while the Saints had five service miscues. In a set that was tied six times, Lourdes pulled away late with four of the final five points in the match.
Brayden Moyars (McCordsville, Ind./Cathedral H.S.) had a match-high 15 digs for Lourdes while Olak added three aces.
Daniel Rua led Siena Heights (3-5, 1-3 WHAC) with 11 kills and hit .375 while Jonathan Stovring added 10 kills. Defensively, Jacob Kisner picked up 13 digs.
Lourdes (2-7, 2-1) will return home on Tuesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Bethel (Ind.). The opening serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
