Lourdes suffered its first two setbacks of the season on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a doubleheader to 14
th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan 11-3 and 8-5 at Oak Hill High School in Converse, Ind.
"We knew going in that they would be tough competition," head coach
Caitlin Blanchard said afterwards. "We gave up a few big innings defensively, but they didn't hang their heads at all. I was really proud of their competitive mentality and the resiliency. The highlight of the day was how well our freshman pitcher,
Taylor Leggins, did against their really strong hitting lineup."
The Wildcats jumped in front quickly in game one, hitting three home runs in the opening inning on the way to plating six.
Taylor Leggins (Parma, Ohio/Normandy H.S.) came on in relief with one out in the inning and ended the frame before tossing two more scoreless frames.
Lourdes broke through on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run by
Jaylen Jackson (Newark, Ohio/Newark H.S.), the first of her collegiate career. The Wildcats answered with four in the bottom of the frame though to push the lead to 10-2.
The Gray Wolves extended the game with a run in the fifth as
Brooke Albert (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights H.S.) walked and scored one batter later on a
Rachel Mease (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville H.S.) triple. Indiana Wesleyan would end the game with a run in the bottom half of the inning though.
Indiana Wesleyan (2-0) scored a first inning run only for Lourdes to answer in the second on a
Megan Richardson (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) double. The Wildcats would respond with a single run in the second and plated five more in the third to build a 7-1 lead.
Lourdes scored four times in the sixth to pull within two. Richardson had a two-run double and
Annalisse Palma (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) added a RBI in the inning. The hosts added one late insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
Richardson and
Lindsey McGann (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson H.S.) each had two hits for Lourdes in game two.
Lourdes (4-2) returns home on Tuesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Malone in a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is set for 1 p.m. at Gray Wolf Field.
