After dropping game one of Monday's doubleheader to Malone 3-0, Lourdes responded with a 9-0 victory in game two at Gray Wolf Field.
"After dropping the first game due to defensive miscues and a lack of offensive production, it was great to see the team bounce back to get a decisive victory in game two," head coach
Caitlin Blanchard said afterwards.
Lourdes managed just six hits in the opener with
Taylor Leggins (Parma, Ohio/Normandy H.S.) going 2-for-3 to lead the offense. She also went the distance in the circle, striking out four and walking three while scattering eight hits. She allowed three runs, two of which were earned.
Malone took the lead in the second, taking advantage of a pair of Lourdes errors to plate an unearned run. After the run scored, the Pioneers had the bases loaded with none out, but a double play and a strikeout ended the threat. The Pioneers then tallied back-to-back doubles and a sacrifice fly to plate their final two runs in the fourth inning.
Mia Rose went the distance in the circle for the shutout, fanning 10 and walking just one for Malone.
Lourdes bats exploded in game two. With the game scoreless in the third, the Gray Wolves sent 11 hitters to the plate, scoring seven runs on six hits.
Rachel Mease (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville singled home the game's first run before
Lindsey McGann's (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson H.S.) bases clearing triple made it 4-0 Lourdes. An
Emily Wallace (Thornville, Ohio/Lakewood H.S.) RBI single increased the lead to five before
Jaylen Jackson (Newark, Ohio/Newark H.S.) scored on a passed ball.
Brooke Albert's (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights H.S.) run-scoring double pushed the lead to seven.
McGann's second triple of the game in the fourth made it an 8-0 Lourdes lead before Wallace delivered a sacrifice fly to plate McGann with the game's final run.
Berlynn Keller (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) tossed a shutout, giving up just three singles on the afternoon to earn her second win of the year.
"Our offense really exploded in the second game led by clutch extra base hits from freshman
Lindsey McGann," Blanchard added. "
Berlynn Keller pitched a gem with some strong defensive play behind her."
Lourdes (5-3) head to Florida on Saturday to begin its annual spring trip. The Gray Wolves will face Webber International in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at 1 p.m. at Nancy Nichols Field in Babson Park, Fla.
