Lourdes closed out its regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 78-62 victory over Cleary inside Gannon Gymnasium in Lansing, Mich.
"This was a good game to win," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "I saw some good things going into the tournament next week."
Lourdes forced 24 Cougar turnovers leading to 26 Gray Wolf points and held a 38-8 advantage scoring in the paint on the afternoon.
The 13
th-ranked Gray Wolves scored the game's first 12 points in just over three minutes and never trailed on the day. The Cougars cut the lead to six, 19-13, at the 11:20 mark, only for Lourdes to answer with an 11-2 run to push the lead back to 15. Cleary would make one last spurt before halftime, closing to within 38-29 at the break.
The hosts continued to cut into the Lourdes lead to open the second half, pulling within 40-37 just over two minutes into the stanza. A couple of minutes later, the Gray Wolves would go on an 8-0 run to push the lead back to double figures and stayed in control the rest of the way. Lourdes would build its lead to as many as 18 in the closing minutes.
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) led the way for Lourdes with 18 points and five assists while
Stephen Coleman Jr. (Toledo, Ohio/Hillcrest Prep H.S.) added 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Shaunn Monroe (Charleston, W. Va./Fairborn [Ohio] H.S.) added 12 points and seven assists while registering five steals.
Jackie Harris (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales H.S.) gave the Gray Wolves four double figure scorers, finishing with 10 points.
Ben Crenshaw Jr. paced Cleary (3-24, 3-19 WHAC) with 15 points while Chris Williams added 12 points for the Cougars.
Lourdes (21-5, 17-5) finished the regular season in a tie for second place in the final league standings. The Gray Wolves will host a WHAC tournament game on Thursday evening (Feb. 29) beginning at 7 p.m. The official pairings will be announced by the league later this weekend.
