Second Half Rally Lifts Mount Vernon Nazarene Past Lourdes

Mount Vernon Nazarene scored eight unanswered goals in the second half on Monday afternoon, including six a man-up, as the Cougars rallied from a four-goal halftime deficit to defeat Lourdes 9-7 at CH4 Stadium in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

After Mount Vernon Nazarene scored just 1:53 into the game, Lourdes kept the Cougars off the scoreboard the rest of the first half.  Hayden Barber (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) tied the game less than a minute later and Kalani Hale (Charleston, W. Va./Capital H.S.) followed with a tally of his own.

Collin Brutlag (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) added a goal of his own midway through the opening quarter while Jack Durham (Zeeland, Mich./East H.S.) scored late in period to make it 4-1 Gray Wolves.  Darin Briscoe (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Kingston College) increased the lead to 5-1 with his goal with 2:04 to play in the first half.

Mount Vernon Nazarene (4-0) scored five man-up goals in the first 4:31 of the third quarter to rally and take the lead before adding two more goals before the quarter ended.  The Cougars tacked on one more extra man tally midway through the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 9-5.

Gavin Conley (Hanover, Ohio/Licking Valley H.S.) found the back of the cage as did Hale for a second time late in the quarter to cut the deficit in half.  Lourdes would not get any closer the rest of the way though.

Caden Louthan (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs H.S.) handed out three assists on the afternoon while Xander Slate (Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's H.S.) made 10 saves in goal.

Dique Reid (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East H.S.) and Durham led Lourdes with three ground balls each.
