Seventh-ranked Lourdes saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves fell 89-75 at home to Cornerstone inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"Cornerstone was the better and tougher team tonight," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "We didn't play tough or physical enough."
The Golden Eagles never trailed in the game, jumping out to a quick 15-8 lead just over five minutes into the contest. Lourdes would battle back to tie the game at 21 on a three-pointer by
Jakiel Wells (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales H.S.) with 8:06 to play before halftime.
Cornerstone scored the next nine points in just over two minutes to take control and then closed the half on a 20-5 run over the final five minutes of the stanza to take a 52-31 lead into the locker room.
The lead grew to as many as 28, 61-33, in the first three minutes of the second half and Cornerstone maintained a lead of at least 20 until the final six minutes of the game. Lourdes went on a late 19-6 run to close to within 12 in the final minute.
Shaunn Monroe (Charleston, W. Va./Fairborn [Ohio] H.S.) led Lourdes with 22 points and four assists while
Joey Holifield (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) added 19 more, all in the second half. Holifield was 13-for-13 from the free throw line.
Ethan Damerum (Cressage, England/Chornwood Riders H.S.) added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds while Wells chipped in 11 points.
Lourdes was held to just 36.8% shooting for the game and was 3-of-15 (20%) from three-point range.
Mason Brooks came off the bench to lead Cornerstone (16-7, 12-5 WHAC) with 19 points while Luke Rowlinson added 18 more. Eli Steffen had 17 points and nine assists as the Golden Eagles shot 52.6% from the field.
Lourdes (19-2, 15-2) will begin a three-game road trip on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Livonia, Mich. to battle Madonna. The opening tip is set for 3 p.m. inside Alliance Catholic Credit Union Arena.
