For the second straight night 14
th-ranked Lourdes dropped a match in its own Gray Wolf Invitational, falling to ninth-ranked William Penn 25-17, 25-21, 25-15 on Friday night inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"We didn't play well enough against a quality opponent," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "We need to raise our level of play tomorrow to build momentum before the beginning of the conference play next week."
The Statesmen hit .371 for the match, committing just eight attack errors on the night, while limiting Lourdes to a .084 attack percentage.
William Penn never trailed in the opening stanza, using a 6-1 run midway through the set to build a 21-13 lead and pull away. Lourdes kept the second set close, trailing just 20-19, before four straight points allowed the Statesmen to seize control. In the third, William Penn closed the match on an 11-5 run, committing just one attack error in the frame, just as they did in the opening set.
Eduardo Ayala (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Dom Bosco) led Lourdes offensively with 14 kills while
Joey Bianco (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder H.S.) handed out 25 assists. On defense,
Brayden Moyars (McCordsville, Ind./Cathedral H.S.) picked up eight digs while
Reshawn Allen (Montgomery, Ill./Oswego H.S.) was in on a pair of blocks.
Charlie Figy led William Penn (4-1) with nine kills and hit .750 while adding four blocks.
Lourdes (0-5) will close out the weekend event on Saturday, hosting 11
th-ranked Georgetown (Ky.). The first serve is set for 12:30 p.m.
