Big Third Quarter Lifts Madonna Past Lourdes

Lourdes was within striking distance at halftime on Saturday afternoon but Madona shutout the Gray Wolves in the third quarter on the way to a 17-7 victory at the Madonna Soccer & Lacrosse Field in Livonia, Mich.

The Gray Wolves struck first as Caden Louthan (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs H.S.) scored a man-down at the 9:33 mark of the opening period.  Madonna responded with the next four goals before Kalani Hale (Charleston, W. Va./Capital H.S.) stopped the run late in the opening quarter.

Madonna pushed the lead to 6-2 before Jack Durham (Zeeland, Mich./East H.S.) and Hayden Barber (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) scored back-to-back goals to pull the Gray Wolves within two.  The Crusaders would score the next two goals though to take an 8-4 lead into intermission.

The Crusaders scored the only five goals of the third and added two more to start the fourth to extend the lead to 15-4 and Lourdes was unable to recover.  Louthan and Barber both scored their second goals of the game in the final stanza while Darin Briscoe (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Kingston College) also picked up a goal.

Gaspar Ferraro (Shreveport, La./C.E. Byrd H.S.) won 16-of-28 faceoffs for the Gray Wolves while picking up a team-high eight ground balls.  Durham added five more ground balls while Barber had three caused turnovers.

Xander Slate (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's H.S.) made 11 saves in goal while Tim Weaver (Frederick, Md./Frederick H.S.) made three more fourth quarter stops.

Reid Dunavant led Madonna (6-3, 2-1 WHAC) with seven goals while Zachary Lane had two goals and five assists.

Lourdes (3-4, 0-3) will have a week off before returning home next Saturday as the Gray Wolves entertain Indiana Tech.  The opening faceoff is set for 11 a.m. at Ottawa Hills High School.
