Lourdes was within striking distance at halftime on Saturday afternoon but Madona shutout the Gray Wolves in the third quarter on the way to a 17-7 victory at the Madonna Soccer & Lacrosse Field in Livonia, Mich.
The Gray Wolves struck first as
Caden Louthan (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs H.S.) scored a man-down at the 9:33 mark of the opening period. Madonna responded with the next four goals before
Kalani Hale (Charleston, W. Va./Capital H.S.) stopped the run late in the opening quarter.
Madonna pushed the lead to 6-2 before
Jack Durham (Zeeland, Mich./East H.S.) and
Hayden Barber (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) scored back-to-back goals to pull the Gray Wolves within two. The Crusaders would score the next two goals though to take an 8-4 lead into intermission.
The Crusaders scored the only five goals of the third and added two more to start the fourth to extend the lead to 15-4 and Lourdes was unable to recover. Louthan and Barber both scored their second goals of the game in the final stanza while
Darin Briscoe (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Kingston College) also picked up a goal.
Gaspar Ferraro (Shreveport, La./C.E. Byrd H.S.) won 16-of-28 faceoffs for the Gray Wolves while picking up a team-high eight ground balls. Durham added five more ground balls while Barber had three caused turnovers.
Xander Slate (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's H.S.) made 11 saves in goal while
Tim Weaver (Frederick, Md./Frederick H.S.) made three more fourth quarter stops.
Reid Dunavant led Madonna (6-3, 2-1 WHAC) with seven goals while Zachary Lane had two goals and five assists.
Lourdes (3-4, 0-3) will have a week off before returning home next Saturday as the Gray Wolves entertain Indiana Tech. The opening faceoff is set for 11 a.m. at Ottawa Hills High School.
