Lourdes began the first of five days at the Space Coast Games on Monday, defeating Trinity Christian 6-1 in the opener before falling 3-0 to Ave Maria at USSSA Space Coast in Melbourne, Fla.
Â
"We played quality softball all day," head coach
Caitlin Blanchard said afterwards. "Palma set the ton with a lead-off home run in game one and we had production up and down the lineup. The pitchers did a nice job complimenting one another all day. Berlynn pitched a great game two against a tough team."
Â
Annalisse Palma (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) roped the second pitch of the day over the leftfield fence to give the Gray Wolves a 1-0 lead against Trinity Christian. Lourdes added to its lead in the third with back-to-back two-out RBI singles by
Olivia Hickman (Trenton, Mich./Trenton H.S.) and
Taylor Leggins (Parma, Ohio/Normandy H.S.).
Â
The Gray Wolves did more damage with two outs in the sixth.Â
Rachel Mease (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville H.S.) drove home two with a double to right-center and
Megan Richardson (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) followed with a triple to left, making it a 6-0 game.
Â
Kirsten Smith (Marysville, Mich./Marysville H.S.) tossed five shutout innings before Trinity Christian (5-7) scored a run in the top of the sixth. She departed with the bases loaded and one out, with
Jaylen Jackson (Newark, Ohio/Newark H.S.) coming on for her first collegiate appearance in the circle. She induced a pair of ground outs, retiring the side without any more damage on her way to earning her first collegiate save. Smith picked up the win (3-1), scattering eight hits and just walking two while striking out two.
Â
Lourdes managed just four hits in game two against Ave Maria. The Gyrenes took the lead with a single run in the third before adding tallies in both the sixth and the seventh.
Â
Berlynn Keller (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) went the distance in the circle. She yielded eight hits and three walks in the loss (2-3).
Â
Lourdes (6-6) returns to USSSA Space Coast on Tuesday. The Gray Wolves face 14
th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan at 12:15 p.m. before battling Fort Lauderdale at 4:45 p.m.
