Lourdes broke out the bats on Wednesday afternoon and completed a doubleheader sweep of Siena Heights, winning by scores of 7-2 an 16-9 at Christensen Field in Adrian, Mich.
Â
The Gray Wolves jumped in front in the opening inning of game one on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Emily Wallace (Thornville, Ohio/Lakewood H.S.) and a two-run single by
Olivia Hickman (Trenton, Mich./Trenton H.S.). Wallace doubled home another run in the fifth before three more runs crossed the plate in the sixth inning, including an RBI triple by
Lauren Schuller (Antwerp, Ohio/Antwerp H.S.).
Â
Kirsten Smith (Marysville, Mich./Marysville H.S.) went the distance in the circle in the opener, allowing just a run in each the sixth and seventh innings, only one of which was earned. She struck out eight and scattered just six hits.
Â
In game two,
Annalisse Palma (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) opened with a three-run home run in the top of the first. After the Saints answered with two of their own in the bottom of the frame, Albert hit a two-run blast in the second to make it 5-2 Gray Wolves.
Â
Siena Heights (8-14, 1-5 WHAC) scored four in the bottom of the second to take a 6-5 lead, only to see Palma double home two in the third to allow Lourdes to retake the lead. The Saints then tied the game in the bottom of the third and the game stayed knotted at seven until the Gray Wolves erupted in the late innings.
Â
Lourdes scored four times in the sixth and added five more runs in the seventh while yielding just a solo run in each of the bottom half of the innings. A double steal, with Albert crossing the plate put the Gray Wolves in front for good while Palma added a two-run double in the sixth and
Jaylen Jackson (Newark, Ohio/Newark H.S.) also had a RBI hit.
Â
In the seventh, Wallace and Hickman both had RBI singles while the Gray Wolves used their speed on the base paths to steal several other runs.
Â
Smith came on in relief, tossing the final four innings for her second win of the day in the circle.
Â
Palma and Albert both had three-hit games in the nightcap with Palma driving in seven runs in the game.Â
Â
Lourdes (11-21, 5-7) returns to Gray Wolf Field on Saturday afternoon to begin its final homestand of the season. The Gray Wolves host Indiana Tech for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
