Cleary Spoils Senior Day for Lourdes Softball

Lourdes celebrated its six seniors prior to Sunday afternoon's doubleheader against Cleary, but the Cougars spoiled the party on the field sweeping a doubleheader from the Gray Wolves 8-3 and 9-3 at Gray Wolf Field.
 
Cleary jumped in front with a second inning home run in game one only to see the Gray Wolves answer in the bottom of the frame as Berlynn Keller (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at one.
 
The Cougars took the lead for good in the second, scoring five times, all unearned, as Cleary took advantage of three Lourdes errors in the inning.
 
An RBI groundout off the bat of Lindsey McGann (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson H.S.) plated a second run for Lourdes in the bottom of the third before the Cougars would retire 12 straight Gray Wolves over the next four innings.
 
Cleary added single runs in the fourth and sixth frames before Taylor Leggins (Parma, Ohio/Normandy H.S.) had a seventh inning sacrifice fly for the Gray Wolves for the game's final run.
 
Brooke Albert (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights H.S.) had two of the Gray Wolves' four hits in the opener.
 
Game two was nearly a carbon copy of the opener.  After a second inning home run by Cleary, Jaylen Jackson (Newark, Ohio/Newark H.S.) tied the game in the bottom half of the frame with a run-scoring single to plate Olivia Hickman (Trenton, Mich./Trenton H.S.), who doubled in the frame for one of two hits she had in the nightcap.
 
Cleary (12-20, 7-9 WHAC) retook the lead for good in the top of the third, batting around while scoring four times before a McGann double in the bottom of the third made it a 5-2 game.  The Cougars then broke the game open with four more runs in the fifth.
 
The Gray Wolves scored their final run in the sixth on a Jackson sacrifice fly that plated Wallace, who also had a two-hit game.
 
Lourdes (11-25, 5-11) will close out the home portion of its schedule on Thursday afternoon, hosting Michigan-Dearborn in a doubleheader to make up an April 3 postponement.  The first pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. at Gray Wolf Field.
