Kirsten Smith (Marysville, Mich./Marysville H.S.) threw the first no-hitter in Lourdes' softball history on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves swept a doubleheader from Rochester Christian 8-0 and 13-5 at Gray Wolf Field.
"I'm super happy for Kirsten," head coach
Caitlin Blanchard said afterwards. "She's already in the Lourdes record book for some other pitching stats so it's pretty special for her to be able to add a no-hitter to her list of accomplishments."
Smith allowed a lead-off walk in the first and walked another batter in the sixth inning. The only other Rochester Christian (2-19, 0-8 WHAC) hitter to reach base was on an error in the third as Smith struck out five on the way to the win (4-5).
Jaylen Jackson (Newark, Ohio/Newark H.S.) put the Gray Wolves on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the second before Lourdes added four more runs in the third, including a two-run double by
Annalisse Palma (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview H.S.). A two-out error plated another run in the fifth before back-to-back run-scoring singles by
Jessyca Smith (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.) and
Lindsey McGann (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson H.S.) closed out the game in the sixth.
Berlynn Keller (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) kept the solid pitching going for the Gray Wolves in game two. She was perfect through the first three innings before giving up a leadoff single in the fourth. She would earn the win (3-5) allowing just the one hit in 5.1 innings of work on the day.
Lourdes erupted for eight runs in the opening inning as 12 batters made their way to the plate. McGann drove home the first run of the game while Hickman added a two-run double in the inning. The lead grew to 9-0 as Keller drove in a run in the second on her way to a three-hit game.
The Gray Wolves plated two more in the fifth and closed out the game with a pair of runs in the sixth, with
Lauren Schuller's (Antwerp, Ohio/Antwerp H.S.) sacrifice fly to center ending the game.
Brooke Albert (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights H.S.) went 3-for-3 in the game as well as the Gray Wolves banged out 16 hits.
Lourdes (9-19, 3-5) returns to the diamond on Sunday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Lawrence Tech. The first pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Gray Wolf Field.
