Lourdes saw its 2024 baseball season come to an end on Wednesday as the Gray Wolves dropped a pair of games in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament at Racer Field in Lima, Ohio. Lourdes fell 7-6 to host Northwestern Ohio in game one before being eliminated by Lawrence Tech 15-1.
In the opener against Northwestern Ohio, the Racers jumped in front in the opening inning with a sacrifice fly to open the scoring.
Lourdes responded in a big way in the second inning, plating five runs to take the lead.
Gray Harmer (Delta, B.C./St. Thomas More Collegiate H.S.) put the Gray Wolves in front with a bases loaded, two-run single.
Skylar Mays (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) followed with a run-scoring infield single before Harmer scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1 Lourdes.
A.J. Brinson (Bloomington, Ind./South H.S.) increased the lead to four with an RBI double.
Northwestern Ohio (35-13) would cut its deficit in half in the third with a pair of runs before tying the contest with two more tallies in the fourth. The game stayed knotted at five into the seventh inning.
The Racers broke the deadlock with an RBI groundout before adding a two-out double for an insurance run.
Nick DiGennaro (Oakville, Ont./St. Ignatius of Loyola H.S.) tried to start a comeback in the ninth, launching his 10
th home run of the season, a solo shot with one out. The Gray Wolves then put the tying run on base but were unable to bring it home.
Lourdes had eight hits in the opener, but just four after the second inning. Brinson led the offense going 3-for-4 against the Racers with a pair of doubles.
Bryn Biemiller (Newmarket, Ont./Bill Crothers Secondary H.S.) suffered the loss (2-4) despite a solid relief outing. He went four innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out two.
Brinson stayed hot to lead off game two against Lawrence Tech (30-19). He launched his second home run of the season to start the bottom of the first to give the Gray Wolves a 1-0 lead.
Lourdes (15-31) maintained the lead until the fourth when the Blue Devils hit back-to-back two-out home runs to pull in front 3-1. A pair of Gray Wolf errors in the seventh led to three runs, two of which were unearned. Two more miscues led to six more unearned runs in the eighth as part of a nine-run Lawrence Tech inning to put the game away.
Caleb Edwards-Dugan (Lima, Ohio/Lima Shawnee H.S.) had the lone multi-hit game for the Gray Wolves against Lawrence Tech.
Wyatt Smith (Sycamore, Ohio/Wynford H.S.) started and took the loss (3-6), working four innings while allowing three runs on six hits.
