Rachel Nelson scored in the 58th minute as Lourdes University women's soccer earned a 1-0 victory over Cleary University on Wednesday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.
After a scoreless first half in which Lourdes outshot the Cougars 8-0, the Gray Wolves finally broke through early in the second half. Nelson put away her second shot on goal of the match to give Lourdes the lead in the 58th minute.
The Lourdes defense was impenetrable, not allowing a single shot attempt from Cleary over 90 minutes. Goalkeeper
Samarah Arendsen earned the shutout without needing to make a save, while the Gray Wolves piled up 24 total shots and 11 on frame. Cleary keeper Sara Mecomber kept the contest close with 10 saves.
With the win, Lourdes improved to 6-1 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 4-0.
The Gray Wolves return to action on Saturday, Oct. 4, when they travel to Madonna for another WHAC matchup.
