SYLVANIA, Ohio –
Cecily Hughes and
Payton Childers scored less than four minutes apart early in the second half as Lourdes University women's soccer defeated Lawrence Tech 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Quarterfinals at Wildcat Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, the second-seeded Gray Wolves broke through in the 59th minute when Hughes finished a corner kick from
Rachel Nelson to make it 1-0. Lourdes doubled its advantage three minutes later as Childers scored unassisted in the 63rd minute for her eighth goal of the season.
Lawrence Tech cut the deficit in half in the 86th minute on a strike from Naiara Ripoll, but Lourdes' defense held firm over the final minutes to preserve the victory.
Goalkeeper
Samarah Arendsen recorded five saves to earn the win, while
Natalie Samples added a defensive save on the goal line in the first half. The Gray Wolves held a 9-10 shot margin, and both teams registered seven shots on goal.
With the win, Lourdes improves to 11-2-1 overall and advances to the WHAC Semifinals for the second consecutive season. Lawrence Tech closes its year at 5-8-4.
The Gray Wolves will travel to face No. 3 seed Madonna on Wednesday, Nov. 5, in Livonia, Mich.
