SPRING ARBOR, Mich. (LourdesAthletics.com) --Â The Lourdes University baseball team battled throughout a high-scoring, rain-delayed game, but came up short in a 12-9 loss to Spring Arbor University in a single meeting on Tuesday at Hank Burbridge Field.
The Gray Wolves (0-5) erased an early deficit and briefly took the lead in the fifth before the Cougars (10-5) responded late to secure the victory. Nick DiGennaro highlighted Lourdes' offensive efforts, launching a two-run homer in the second inning—his second consecutive game with a home run and the 14th of his career.
Spring Arbor struck first, plating three runs in the opening frame before DiGennaro's homer brought Lourdes within a run. The Cougars extended their lead to 6-2 after three innings, capitalizing on errors and small-ball execution.
Lourdes answered with a three-run fourth-inning, pulling within one, before taking a 7-6 advantage in the fifth after capitalizing on an error and a wild pitch. The back-and-forth battle continued as Spring Arbor tied the game in the bottom of the inning, and the teams remained deadlocked at 9-9 heading into the eighth.
Drake Sekinger provided a late spark with a solo homer -- the first of his rookie season, but the Cougars responded with a three-run eighth-inning to put the game out of reach.
Riley McKinnon (0-1) took the loss in relief, while J. Murphy (2-0) earned the win for Spring Arbor. Lourdes finished with nine hits in the contest, led by Jackson Kennedy and A.J. Brinson with two apiece.
