TOLEDO, Ohio (LourdesAthletics.com) --Â The Lourdes University baseball team battled back from multiple deficits but couldn't overcome Saginaw Valley State University's offensive bursts on Tuesday evening, falling 10-5 in a non-conference matchup at Mercy Field.
The visiting Cardinals (24-12) broke a scoreless tie with a four-run third inning, then tacked on two more in the fifth and another in the sixth to build a 7-2 lead. Lourdes (9-27) clawed back with a pair of runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth, including a two-run double off the bat of Drake Sekinger that cut the deficit to three.
Saginaw Valley pulled away again with a three-run eighth, capitalizing on an error and a pair of RBI singles to make it 10-4. Jackson Kennedy delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth for Lourdes to cap the scoring.
The Gray Wolves collected nine hits in the game, led by Caleb Edwards-Dugan, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Joel Suraganan also added two hits and a run scored, while Kennedy reached base twice and drove in a run.
Avery Harper (2-2) took the loss for Lourdes, allowing four runs in 2.2 innings of work. Saginaw Valley's Hayden Stempky (2-0) earned the win, striking out seven over five innings.
Lourdes used six pitchers in the game, including Kennedy, who tossed a scoreless ninth inning on the mound.
