Lourdes Rolls Past Olivet in Home Opener

Six different Gray Wolves score in 6-0 shutout

A balanced attack and relentless pressure carried Lourdes University women's soccer to a commanding 6-0 victory over Olivet College on Tuesday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium. Six different Gray Wolves found the back of the net as Lourdes improved to 2-1-0 on the season.

The scoring started early when sophomore Rachel Nelson (West Chester, OH/Cincinnati Christian) fed senior defender Natalie Samples (Wolverine Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Central) for the first goal of the match in just the third minute to give the Gray Wolves a quick lead. Lourdes fired 18 shots in the first half but held a slim 1-0 advantage at the break thanks to strong goalkeeping from Olivet's Arianna Griecci.

The second half was all Lourdes. Kayden Firsdon (Luckey, Ohio/Eastwood) doubled the lead in the 49th minute off a feed from freshman Elliot Ryzyi, and just over 15 minutes later Jaylyn Thornton (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) made it 3-0, assisted by Rachel Nelson).

The Gray Wolves continued to pour it on. Payton Childers (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) scored unassisted in the 69th minute before Gabriella Ferrao (Brantford, Ontario/St. John's College) and Madison Helpman (Bedford, Mich./Bedford Senior) added goals in the final five minutes to complete the 6-0 rout. Ferrao also added an assist on Helpman's tally.

Lourdes finished with a 40-2 advantage in total shots and 11-1 margin in corner kicks. Goalkeepers Samarah Arendsen (Zeeland, Mich./West) and Addison Beil (Swanton, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) combined for the shutout, with Beil making two saves in relief.

"This was a total team win," head coach Jackie Phillips said. "We had contributions from all over the field, and I was proud of how we kept the pressure on for 90 minutes."

The Gray Wolves (2-1-0) return to action on Thursday, Sept. 18, hosting Goshen College at 2 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
