Lourdes University men's soccer delivered its most complete performance of the season Wednesday evening, upsetting No. 12 Indiana Tech 3-0 in the Gray Wolves' Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference home opener at Wildcat Stadium.
Lourdes grabbed the lead in the 25th minute when
Jon Slay (Toledo, Ohio) netted his first goal of the year, finishing a cross from
Tyson Woodring (Toledo, Ohio). The Gray Wolves doubled the advantage early in the second half as
Martin Coronel (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) converted a penalty kick in the 55th minute to make it 2-0.
Just eight minutes later, Lourdes put the match out of reach when Woodring scored off a setup from
Nawfal Hassani (Toledo, Ohio), giving the hosts a commanding 3-0 cushion.
Defensively,
Yianni Kanellopoulos (Toledo, Ohio) anchored the shutout, recording two saves. The back line, bolstered by defensive saves from Coronel and a second-half block by Hassani, kept Indiana Tech's attack frustrated despite the Warriors outshooting Lourdes 14-13.
Woodring finished the night with a goal and an assist, while Coronel led all players with three shots on target. The Gray Wolves also held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks, generating steady pressure throughout the second half.
The victory lifts Lourdes to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the WHAC, handing Indiana Tech (5-3-1, 1-1 WHAC) its first conference loss of the season.
Lourdes will continue WHAC play on Saturday, Sept. 27, hosting Rochester Christian University in a 7 p.m. kickoff at Wildcat Stadium.
