SYLVANIA, Ohio – Lourdes women's basketball (19-6, 15-4 in WHAC) fell 60 to 65 to 24
th-ranked Indiana Tech (21-4, 18-1 in WHAC) at the Ebeid Rec Center on Wednesday evening.
The Gray Wolves had over 200 people in the stands to watch the top two teams in the conference battle it out.
Lourdes also hosted the competitive cheer team's senior night at halftime, recognizing over a dozen student-athletes that have helped lead the program to high amounts of success over the past few seasons.
The Indiana Tech victory has separated them considerably in the WHAC standings, moving them three games above Lourdes, Aquinas and Rochester Christian, who are now all in a three-way tie for second place.
1st Quarter
Senior guard
Emma Pedroza scored nine points in the first quarter, jump-starting Lourdes' offense to a 15 to 13 lead at the end of the period. Pedroza ended the game with a team-leading 23 points on the night.
The Warriors offense was shut down through the first 10 minutes, shooting 31.3% from the field and only making five field goals.
2nd Quarter
Indiana Tech stormed back in the second quarter, doubling up Lourdes 20 to 10 and taking an eight-point halftime lead. Lourdes' offense was stifled by the Warriors interior defense, shooting just 3-for-18 in the quarter.
On the bright side, Lourdes forward
Tamyah Worthy broke the Lourdes women's basketball single-season steals program record in the second quarter; tallying her 73
rd steal of the year. Worthy has had back-to-back 70 steal seasons in her junior and senior campaigns.
Meanwhile, only Mercedes Wagner has had one 70 steal season prior to Worthy in Lourdes history. Worthy also ranks 2
nd on the all-time Lourdes career steals list with 158.
She also had 12 rebounds in Wednesday's game, her fifth double-digit rebound game of the season and fourth in the last month. She's now just 14 rebounds away from reaching the 450 career mark at Lourdes.
3rd Quarter
Junior guard
Kaylona Butler outscored the entire Indiana Tech offense 13 to 8 in the third quarter, going a perfect four-for-four from the free throw line, three-for-three for layups, and draining a corner three pointer. The local Toledo, Ohio native ended the game with 20 points, 18 of which came in the second half.
Lourdes started off the quarter on a 12 to four run and ended the quarter regaining the lead by a point with an and-one basket made by Butler.
4th Quarter
The final frame was set up to be a battle until the finish line. Lourdes came into the quarter up by a point and the game was tied at 48 two minutes into the quarter. Indiana Tech then went on a crucial 10 to three run over the next four minutes to take a seven-point lead.
Butler, Worthy, and Pedroza all made mid-range shots for Lourdes but they were counteracted by layups in the paint by the Warriors, resulting in a 64 to 57 Indiana Tech lead with a minute remaining.
It looked like all the momentum was with Indiana Tech before
Emma Pedroza made a clutch three-pointer to cut the lead to four with 20 seconds left.
Forced to foul, Lourdes sent Taylor Covington to the line for Indiana Tech, who made one of two free throws to extend the lead to five points.
Lourdes still had a slim chance with a two possession game and 10 seconds left, but two missed three-pointers ended the game and gave the Gray Wolves their first two-game losing streak since falling to Georgetown College and Brescia at the end of December.
Stats
Lourdes went 14-for-14 from the free throw line which helped them keep pace with Indiana Tech's offense throughout the game. The Warriors outshot the Gray Wolves by 8% from the field and 1.7% from the three-point line.
Two Indiana Tech players posted double-doubles on the night. Ryan Moorer had 23 points with 12 rebounds and Jaidyn Gulley had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Indiana Tech slightly outrebounded Lourdes by three and won the turnover battle by three.
