LIVONIA, Mich. – The Lourdes competitive cheer team won their first ever WHAC regular season championship, the conference officially announced this afternoon.
The Gray Wolves finished in second place in Saturday's competition at Madonna with a final score of 85.73, their fourth consecutive finish with 80 points or higher. Lourdes has yet to obtain below a runner-up placement this season with two competition victories and two second place finishes.
The WHAC awards each team six points for finishing in first in a league meet, five for finishing in second, four finishing in third, and so on. This scoring system brings Lourdes' total number of league points to 16 on the season, barely edging out Madonna's 15 and Siena Heights' 14, and clinching the program's first-ever WHAC regular season title.
Rounding out the final conference standings is Aquinas in fourth place, Cornerstone in fifth and Rochester Christian in sixth.
The Terracotta and Gray close out their season with a non-league meet at Spring Arbor next weekend and then will look to defend their conference tournament title on March 7 at Aquinas. Lourdes head coach
Kortney Nieckarz had the following to say post-competition on the title accomplishment and the work still to do to reach their ultimate goal: winning back-to-back WHAC tournament titles.
"On Saturday, we put out a clean routine with zero deductions, and that is something this team should be proud of," Coach Nieckarz said. "Execution-wise, they did their job and showed the discipline and composure we've been training for all season. However, a clean routine does not mean we're finished, it simply means we're progressing. There are still areas we can refine, and we know we need to continue building our difficulty if we want to reach the standard we've set for ourselves. Coming in second place, while still securing the regular season title speaks to the consistency of this group, and I'm grateful for the work they've put in week after week. In a season marked by uncertainty, their focus and resilience have not gone unnoticed. Now more than ever, I'm expecting our seniors to take ownership of this final stretch. Leadership will be critical. Their ability to steady the team, raise the standard in practice, and push through adversity will define how we finish."
