ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – The Lourdes women's basketball team (19-4, 15-2 in WHAC) defeated Rochester Christian (14-9, 13-4 in WHAC) 71 to 63 on the road Wednesday evening, breaking the program regular season win record that was previously set by last year's WHAC Tournament Championship team.
The victory also gives Lourdes 15 conference wins for the first time in school history and their second eight-game winning streak of the season.
Only first-place Indiana Tech has as good of an overall record as the Gray Wolves in the WHAC and Lourdes is still just one game back from them in the conference standings. The loss drops Rochester Christian to 4
th-place after Aquinas beat Michigan-Dearborn earlier in the day.
1st Quarter
The Gray Wolves started off the game leading 11 to 7 with four minutes left to go in the first quarter. Junior guard
Kaylona Butler scored six points for Lourdes in the first and finished the game leading the team with 19 points. She almost had a double-double after notching nine rebounds in the game as well. Despite Butler's good start, the Warriors ended the quarter off an a 9-2 run to take a 16 to 13 lead heading into the second.
2nd Quarter
Lourdes struck back in the second with an 18 to 12 advantage in the quarter, giving the Gray Wolves a three-point lead at the half.
Senior forward
Tamyah Worthy made three layups in a row in the first five minutes of the quarter. Worthy had another exceptional game on both ends of the court, finishing with a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Worthy now has three double-doubles on the season, all of which have come in the last month. Her defense has always been a strong suit but her scoring output has dramatically increased in recent weeks, bringing her season average up to 9.0 points per game.
3rd Quarter
After putting up massive offensive numbers the past several games, senior guard
Emma Pedroza was held scoreless in the first half for the first time all season. This narrative changed in the third quarter when she lead the team with seven points. Pedroza ended the game with 12 and now has 1,750 points on the season. With a few games left in the regular season, and potentially many more in the postseason, she has a slight chance to get to 2,000 by the end of the year.
Pedroza also swiped two steals in the third quarter and had a career-high seven steals in the game. The all-time leader in steals in Lourdes program history now has 175 career steals. Pedroza's play on both ends of the court in the third helped Lourdes increase their lead to nine heading into the fourth.
4th Quarter
A 7-0 run by RCU brought the Lourdes lead down to three with seven minutes left in the game. However, the Gray Wolves defense was able to force four turnovers over the next three minutes to push the lead back to double digits.
Lourdes' ferocious press defense helped to force 22 Warriors turnovers in the game, helping the Gray Wolves to garner enough stops to hold onto the eight-point victory and put their names in the program record books.
