RICHMOND, Ind. – The Lourdes men's volleyball team (15-3, 9-1 in WHAC) remains ranked No. 8 in the country after sweeping IU East on the road in Richmond on Tuesday evening.
The Gray Wolves won the non-conference match 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 in one of their most dominant performances to date. Lourdes' No. 8 ranking is still the highest in the conference with a month left in the season.
1st Set
The Gray Wolves started off the first set on a 6-3 run highlighted by three
Jaber Badarne kills. The reigning WHAC Attacker of the week has hit exactly 200 kills on the season after leading the team with 15 in the match against IU East.
IU East started to make up ground in the set after trimming the lead to 20-17. However, a huge
Felipe Tramontin ace stopped the momentum and led to Lourdes taking the first set by six points. The sophomore outside hitter from Brazil has been a machine behind the service line this year, ranking second on the team with 21 service aces.
2nd Set
The Terracotta & Gray set the tone with three straight points off attack errors to start the second set. However, IU East kept up with Lourdes' offense with key kills and blocks from Vincius Lopes. Lopes, a senior from Brazil was a transfer to IU East from Lourdes last season. He made an impact in the second set, but it wasn't enough to slow down Lourdes' attacking at the net. The Gray Wolves eventually pulled away with an impressive nine point second set victory.
3rd Set
IU East's home crowd got behind the Red Wolves as they had the early 10-8 lead over Lourdes in the third set. However, Lourdes put an end to the run with a 7-3 run of their own.
Felipe Tramontin had three kills and another ace in the run.
Lourdes had three separate three point runs at the end of the match to prevent any hope for the Red Wolves to comeback.
Stats
Lourdes held the advantage in nearly every statistical category, leading the Red Wolves in kills by seven, in aces by five, in blocks by one, and in set assists by four. IU East had two more digs than Lourdes in the match.
