VIERA, Fla. – The Lourdes softball team (1-5, 0-0 in WHAC) lost to St. Francis (Ill.) and Barry University on Tuesday's Space Coast Tournament doubleheader.
The Gray Wolves fall to 1-3 in the tournament and 1-5 overall on the year. Lourdes won the tournament opener against Saint Mary-of-the Woods but have struggled offensively since in their losses to Fort Lauderdale, St. Francis, and Barry.
Game 1: L, 1-2 vs. St. Francis (Ill.)
The matinee on Tuesday was a pitchers duel from wire to wire. Sophomore standout
Cassi Kieper pitched great for her second complete game of the tournament. The Siena Heights transfer threw six innings with two earned runs allowed. She leads the pitching staff with a 1-1 record, 3.65 E.R.A and 16 strikeouts.
On the opposite side, St. Francis' (Ill.) Kaitlyn Schofield won her fifth game of the season off of pounding the strike zone. Schofield had just one walk allowed, threw five strikeouts, and allowed just two Gray Wolves hits.
Skylar Mitchell and
Maddie Darrah were the only Lourdes players to get hits in the game, and they both came in the second inning. Darrah scored Mitchell on an RBI single to give Lourdes the 1-0 lead.
However, the lead was short lived as the Fighting Saints' offense struck back in the third with an RBI double to tie the game. Schofield retired the last seven Gray Wolves batters in a row as the Saints' Missy Saldana hit a walk off double in the bottom of the seventh to win the battle.
Game 2: L, 4-7 vs. Barry
Lourdes lost the nightcap 4-7 to the Barry Buccaneers. The Bucs are an NCAA D2 school in Florida with one of the biggest college campuses in the country. Barry got off to a good start offensively and didn't look back, scoring the first four runs of the game off Lourdes' starter
Mallori Bradley.
The Gray Wolves offense eventually came alive in the fifth inning when utility player
Ava Auler hit a two-run double to score
Lindsey McGann and
Cami Heath. A few innings later, McGann hit an RBI double herself to score Heath.
Olivia Hickman then scored McGann on a fielder's choice to cut the Barry lead to one run.
The Buccaneers stopped the Lourdes momentum after the No. 5 through No. 7 batters all got doubles to extend the final lead to three runs. One of those batters was Isabel Vera. The power-hitting third baseman went a perfect 4-for-4 for Barry in the game. Overall, the No. 5-No. 7 part of the Buccaneers' order went 8-for-12 with five RBI's and five doubles in the game.
Stats
Tuesday was Lourdes' quietest offensive day of the season with seven hits combined in the two games.
Cami Heath and
