VIERA, Fla. – The Lourdes softball team (2-6, 0-0 in WHAC) lost to the No. 14-ranked Keiser Seahawks (22-2), 1-7 in the Space Coast Tournament's late afternoon game on Wednesday.
The Gray Wolves fought hard against one of the toughest NAIA Softball teams in the entire country, but fell behind by too many runs too early in the game to come back. Keiser also had a significant advantage in that their home crowd traveled extremely well since their campus is only two and a half hours south of the Space Coast Complex.
The Seahawks fans got the Keiser offense fired up for an electric first inning. Genesis Iglesias crushed a two-run homerun to give Keiser an early 2-0 lead. Later in the opening frame, Sarah Phipps and Ava Stahl each knocked in a couple more runs for a 4-0 Keiser advantage.
Lourdes' starting pitcher
Cassi Kieper was taken out of the game in the second inning after giving up two more runs off a single and a throwing error. She left the game in a 0-6 deficit with runners on base for
Mallori Bradley to try and hold. Bradley got out of the inning without giving up another run and only gave up one more run to Keiser throughout the rest of the game.
Lourdes' offense got base runners in multiple innings down the stretchm but left a few too many runners on base, resulting in just the lone run coming across to score. Keiser threw three different pitchers who all had slightly different deliveries and different strengths in their arsenal. The depth of the Seahawks' pitching staff stifled the Gray Wolves offense.
Despite the loss, Lourdes hung in with one of the best teams in the country, consistently putting pressure on the Keiser pitching and defense to make plays. Lourdes only struck out three times and reached base six times in the contest.
Stats
Mallori Bradley pitched one of her best games of the season after coming in to relieve
Cassi Kieper. The senior threw 5.2 innings with one earned run and six strikeouts. Offensively,
Maddie Darrah had a nice double and
Olivia Rompf had the Gray Wolves' RBI.
Jessyca Smith had the best overall day at the plate with two hits.
